Thanks Barb and mchip. I e-mailed DLJDirect and received the following reply today:

We apologize for any misinformation that you may have received. You can short bulletin boards stocks at DLJdirect, providing they are available to short, and that you have 100% of the equity requirement.

You are also right about DLJ's service, although they're in an uptrend. It's improved lately from execrable to poor. I don't buy or sell that often, so I put up with it. Most of my transactions are market orders put in through the web site before the open, and those go through just fine. (I know, I know. Like I said, I'm not a trader <g>). Shorts are a different animal though.
