Gorilla's can change. PC Gorilla story: compaq replaced ibm in mid 80's as gorilla of PC's; then dell replaced compaq as current pc gorilla...seems to be a 8 year run as the PC gorilla.

IBM evolved to become new gorilla of professional services firms. IBM global services success and was the main reason IBM came back to life.
Andersen Consulting (ex-gorilla in IS Services) and BIG 5 consulting firms (chimps) are finding IBM a good gorilla in this space partnering together and not just stomping on them. All team up against poor old oucast chimp EDS.

Cisco is probably 5 years into an 8 year run as the network manufacturing hardware gorilla. SAP replaced Oracle as ERP gorilla after Oracle's 8 year run.

don't forget past net h/ware chips; net, timeplex, paradyne, synoptics, wellfleet; the cisco gorilla ate them for lunch and the new chimps surrounding cisco ; juniper, ciena, lu, nn, nt, siemens, coms, alcatel, nec, cs, ods, fore, lannet, may insure a new gorilla in named by 2003. watch INS the gorilla (internet only)services firm; they may be help throne a new gorilla versus cisco...remember how powerful services became in the old mainframe era when market was not driven by tornado stage anymore.

note: Nokia replaced Motorola's 12 year reign as wireless gorilla with qualcomm, lu, ericcson scattered around as chimps.

Sony has been consumer electronics gorilla for 7 years.
