Paul - FYI: Comments from STMicro Grand Poobah Pasquale Pistorio

ebnonline.com

With regard to x86 strategy (Bold is mine):

Q: You're not interested in buying Cyrix, are you?

A: [Laughs.] National bought them already.

Q: Well, then, are you satisfied with your x86 strategy? What's the status?

A: We have said that it is not our priority, but it is an interesting complement, and since the beginning, we wanted to do system-on-a-chip but not face Intel. We developed a single-chip PC with an x86 core, and we carved a nice niche in the market with a Web navigator. So we are getting some-but nothing dramatic-returns.

Well, I guess STM is now on Scumbria's sh-- list, since Pasquale isn't into jeopardizing his sucessful and profitable business taking on the evil empire in x86.

Now, Pasquale on FLASH:

...ST is “extremely well positioned to be No. 2 in the year 2000,” he said. “And then we will be challenging No. 1, Intel. But this will take a little bit longer to do.”

OOOPS! Here's a rallying for Scumbria! Note, however, the absence of AMD in even this aspect of the conversation. Didn't AMD want to be #1 in FLASH too? Another casuality of the CPU wars, along with Vantis, Networking, HQ, etc.

PB

Paul,

At the same time he said that AMD was bang on the button for a June (K7) release and would come out with 500MHz, 550MHz and 600MHz versions at launch date.

June is less than 2 weeks away!

INTEL TO STOP SHIPMENT OF PENTIUM II MICROPROCESSOR
NEW DELHI, May 17, 1999 (Asia Pulse via COMTEX) -- The US microchip major, Intel Corporation will stop the shipment of its Pentium II (P-II) microprocessor in six months from now to further accelerate Pentium-III, the latest version into the mainstream market.
"The Pentium-II (P-II) will give way to its next generation processors and we will stop the shipment of P-II in another six months from now," Intel Corporation South Asia director Atul Vijaykar told the Press Trust of India.

He said the new generation Pentium III processor would change the entire spectrum of information technology and had already captured a 10 per cent market share.

Intel was targeting to corner 50 per cent of the market by the end of this year, he added.

"The initial response of P-III is tremendous. It is about 93 per cent faster than its P-II version and the much advanced versions of P-III will soon hit the market," he said.

Intel has already stopped shipment of its older version of micron chips following the success of later versions, including the P-II, Xeon and Celeron processors.

The South Asia chief said the agenda before the company was to promote electronic commerce (E-commerce) by acting as a consultant and catalyst.

"The rapid emergence of e-business and the growth of the internet and intranet-based computing are expanding the role of personal computer and the need of security in net transactions. Intel will play its role effectively and efficiently," he said.
