You missed the 'and accept what they are told as gospel' part of the quote. Changes the meaning entirely. I personally call companies all the time, but not <snort> non-reporting bulletin board promotions. Even with legitimate reporting companies it is imho wise to hold back one's credence until it is earned. Actually, that's one of the reasons I do call some of the more speculative ones, to find out just how promotional they are. Keeping detailed notes and then comparing promise with later reality usually tells the story. Sort of like what jhild does, except I don't have his memory, have to keep notes.
