" ...the US has an fact had in issue with the PTTs around the globe, and Commerce has been attempting to get other players on the international scene to comply with some tariff and settlement rate reform."

Frank,
Sorry about that. I was just being facetious. I figure if the Baby Bells can't do long distance in the US outside their own territories, then the FCC surely wouldn't considering letting them to international LD on top of national LD! A double whammy all around.

Unless the environment has drastically changed over there, this ought to be killed pretty quickly. But the CEO of US West and Global did manage to bring in AT&T DOMINATION of the cable plant.

But overall, I'm still amazed out how the press is running the story. Haven't they learned over the last two and half years, that these deals generally go nowhere? I'm still at a loss how this is so different.

CNNfN, which is generally off the mark anyway, went nuts broadcasting this deal as if it was already in the bank. They even went so far as to say they, "...believe there will be little to no opposition from the FCC." <VBG>

Hey I shouldn't be making fun of the reporters because I have to admit I missed a TON of investment opps in this sector. Who would have thought, little old Global($424 million revs), would be merging with US West($12.4 billion revs) as a 50-50 deal??!!

I cannot evaluate these deals, anymore than I can an Internut. Both are based on market values that are simply astronomical by any previous standards.
