BUFFETT HAS BOUGHT 2.2% OF ALLIED DOMECQ

LONDON, May 18 (Reuters) - Britain's drinks group Allied Domecq <ALLD.L> said on Tuesday that Warren Buffett's investment vehicle Berkshire Hathaway <BRKa.N> has bought a 2.2 percent stake in the UK company.
"We can confirm a stake in the name of Berkshire Hathaway," said a spokesman. "This emerged out of one of our routine enquiries," he added. "We put out a 212 notice to nominee holdings to ask which investor was behind the nominee holding."
Ever since U.S. investment guru Warren Buffett revealed in April that he had started buying into a British quoted company, the market has been feverishly trying to predict which blue chip stock the influential investor had picked.
Allied shares shot up 29-1/2p or 5.5 percent in pre-market trade to 580p.
Under London Stock Exchange rules, Buffett does not have to disclose any stake until he owns three percent of the company.
However, the company may put out a "212" notice to request a shareholder to reveal their identity if it is concerned about stake-building. The company found that Berkshire Hathaway had nearly 22.8 million shares on April 19.
