Continually Recognized for Innovation, Vignette Jumps From Top 50 Private

Company in 1998 to Top 50 Public Company in 1999

SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Vignette Corporation
(Nasdaq: VIGN), a leader in Internet Relationship Management (IRM) solutions,
today announced it has been included in the Red Herring Top 50 Public
Companies, part of Red Herring magazine's annual list of the top 100 private
and public technology companies in the electronic economy. Featured in the
June 1999 Digital Universe issue available on newsstands May 18, the Herring
100 honors those companies that have defined new standards, defended their
business models, and developed the products and services that will change the
way business gets done.

Red Herring recognized Vignette for doubling its customer base and
broadening its focus. The June 1999 issue reads, "Vignette, winner of the
Best Products and Best Overall awards among our top private companies last
year, continues to impress us_ this year Vignette will release its first
packaged application, which completes the company's classic, three-tiered
enterprise software lineup of platform products, development tools, and
applications."

"We are extremely thrilled to have been selected as one of Red Herring's
top 50 public companies this year, especially after being named a top 50
private company in 1998," said Greg Peters, president and CEO of Vignette.
"Vignette has rapidly transitioned itself from a credible private to a leading
public company. We have worked very hard to build innovative products and a
strong corporate culture with expert employees. We are honored to be included
on the Red Herring's list two years in a row. The awards recognize the
durability of Vignette's long term vision for Internet Relationship Management
solutions and demonstrate our continued momentum as a market leader."

"We hold technology companies to an entirely different set of standards,
standards that prove to us that they are innovators, agents of change, and
leaders truly affecting the construction of the digital economy," said
Jason Pontin, editor of Red Herring. "We see that the emerging networked
economy is one that requires vision, innovation, and proven expertise, and we
think our list encapsulates the companies that have put these qualities to
work."

How They Ranked

In order to accurately represent the technology industry and its key
players, Red Herring editors divided the industry according to its various
sectors -- giving more weight to those sectors that they felt most essential
in building tomorrow's digital universe. Using a system of metrical and
subjective comparisons, the list highlights companies in the following
markets: communications equipment, communications services, wireless equipment
and services, software, systems manufacturers, consumer computing, media,
electronic commerce, and biotechnology.

In choosing its companies, Red Herring looked at criterion from vision,
management, and innovative business strategies to the track record of the
company's venture capitalists, its marketing techniques and the strength of it
partnerships -- all of which impact the companies' abilities to affect change
in the new economy.

Other businesses on the top 50 Public Companies list include Amazon.com,
America Online, AT&T, Compaq Computer, Dell Computer, eBay, IBM, MCI Worldcom,
Microsoft, Sony and Sun Microsystems. A complete list of the 1999 Red Herring
100 Companies is available in the June issue of Red Herring and can be found
on the World Wide Web at redherring.com.

I'm not so sure about that. Personalization, or Internet Relationship Management as Vignette calls it, is also a big piece of what SILK does. SILK just happens to be focused on the ecommerce part in addition to the customization of the site to the user's needs. Vignette tracks user behavior once they arrive, SILK integrates user behavior into existing business models.

Even if you don't agree with my analysis I think we can agree that they are more similar than dissimilar.

Best regards,
Stuart
