Maybe they should raise prices on their books? Oops, can't do that. They've got to lower prices to keep people from using alternative websites.

Untrue. Last year amazon had a "hot 500" or something like that and every book was 40% off. If it wasn't in the hot 500 it was still discounted but I don't recall how much. Prices were raised to what they are today, 40% off best case (but not common), 20-30% off everything else. Amazon gained customers while they raised prices and buy.com and shopping.com are still cheaper.
