Hey look....take this comparison.

There are a lot of clothing stores for casual clothes that sell a LOT cheaper than the Gap or Banana Republic for nicer stuff, but you know what?

Nobody shops there. The brand is the message.

Or how about online brokers?

A lot of brokers are cheaper and way more efficient than ETrade, but you know what?

ETrade is huge. Brand awareness.

These are the gold rush days. The homestake days. You establish your territory and keep the loyals coming back.

Remember. The brand is the message.

Did they gain customers in the sense that people who were already buying books online switched to Amazon? Or did they gain customers because more people are buying books online in general? Are they taking customers away from buy.com and shopping.com? Or are they losing customers to them? How can you tell the difference?

Oh, and Barnes and Noble just made the NYT bestseller list 50% off.
I'm short them, too.

Untrue. Last year amazon had a "hot 500" or something like that and every book was
40% off. If it wasn't in the hot 500 it was still discounted but I don't recall how much.
Prices were raised to what they are today, 40% off best case (but not common), 20-30%
off everything else. Amazon gained customers while they raised prices and buy.com and
shopping.com are still cheaper.

Michelle,

I believe you missed todays press release.
