I've started with the second approach you mentioned. I've fiddled with the setting a couple of times but without a baseline generated from the signals you get in the default settings I feel I don't have anything solid to compare to. Besides, all this experimenting takes up a lot of time that I don't have. Sticking with the default settings and seeing what works has made the most sense for me. I'm beginning to get some interesting results in a 'sample' portfolio.
