In the Zen of investing, there is no such thing as a paper loss. Face it, the loss is real.

Except to the IRS. That's why real losses are preferable to paper losses.

Likewise, paper gains are preferable to real gains. That goes double for shorts, because the "paper" gain is tax-free cash in your pocket.

(Except in IRA accounts - there it makes no difference)
