Company Press Release
Lucent Technologies and WinStar Form Marketing Alliance
Offers to Combine WinStar's Services and Lucent's Products
NEW YORK & MURRAY HILL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 21, 1999-- WINSTAR COMMUNICATIONS, INC. (NASDAQ: WCII - news) and LUCENT TECHNOLOGIES (NYSE: LU - news) today announced a marketing alliance that will bring together WinStar's state-of-the-art telecommunications services with Lucent's communications networking products for business customers worldwide.

The five-year agreement further expands on the companies' long-term strategic relationship to build out WinStar's digital fixed wireless end-to-end broadband network.

''This agreement will deliver $100 million of additional business to WinStar over the next five years,'' said Nathan Kantor, WinStar's president and chief operating officer. ''We are pleased that WinStar is continuing to expand its strategic relationship with Lucent. This joint marketing alliance gives us the ability to reach new customers, as well as the framework through which we can develop new and innovative products and services that draw on each of our company's core strengths. We expect to be able to provide many customers with great value through our combined efforts.''

Under the terms of the marketing agreement, WinStar will team with Lucent to provide enterprise customers with a wide range of telecommunications services - including voice, data and Internet -using Lucent's equipment and software, over WinStar's end-to-end digital broadband network. WinStar's highly flexible fixed wireless network is suited for the complex, high-bandwidth requirements of larger customers, as well as for the needs of small- and medium-size business customers.

Lucent and WinStar will work together to jointly develop and market new products and services, incorporating WinStar's Wireless Fiber(SM) network with Lucent's communications, data networking and business telephone systems. Customers will have a one-stop shopping approach to address their broadband and networking needs.

''This agreement extends our relationship with WinStar into an exciting area,'' said Nina Aversano, president of Lucent's Global Service Provider business in North America. ''We'll take advantage of both companies' diverse strengths and capabilities to jointly develop innovative communications solutions for today's complex business problems.''

In October 1998, WinStar and Lucent announced a five-year agreement to build out WinStar's network. Lucent is providing network design, integration and build-out services for WinStar's end-to-end broadband network, domestically and overseas, as well as its state-of-the-art technology and equipment and up to $2 billion of financing.

Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, N.J., designs, builds and delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications systems and software, data networking systems, business telephone systems and microelectronics components. WinStar Communications, Inc. is a pioneer in providing business customers with broadband communications services, including local and long distance phone service, as well as high-speed Internet access, data and information services. In the past year, WinStar has become one of the largest Internet companies in the U.S. Recently, the company announced a destination Web site for businesses, Office.com(SM), a service from WinStar.
