Safeguard is an interesting model for Ampex...way back when Safeguard main product and cash cow was Safeguard Business Forms, which are still in use...when they saw the potential for computers to change the way documents and information etc are handled, they split the company into Safeguard Scientific and spun off S Business Forms..an early and very successful venture for them was Novell....

Hugh, re the math...give it some more thought...don't confuse the value of Ampex's stake with the % ownership. The whole point of an ipo is to increase value by issuing new shares to new investors at a much higher price than first round financings. The issuance of new shares will increase the number of shares outstanding. Unless Ampex buys some of those new shares, their % ownership of the whole pie will drop.
