As I am a CPA and not an engineer, I didn't know how to answer your questions so I called some engineer friends of mine to get answers.

They said that Great Lakes Chemical is a fine, reputable company. It used to be a high flyer on the stock market, but is down lately. It is a specialty chemical company. It would not be involved in any type of scam. It is very well regarded in the chemical industry.

They said that Great Lakes is a competitive company, not philantropic. It is not a common practice to work with companies to fine tune a process, but they very well could be doing it if they felt that there was some benefit to be made downstream. (i.e. engineering terms: backward integrate.)

One of the engineers told me that he had visited their plant and that it was a fine modern plant. He felt that they are very competitive and, if they were involved with a process "for free", they must see some potential benefit.

I tried to contact some other of the Mallinckrodt engineers referred to me by my friends, but they must be out on Friday afternoon.

By the way, one of my friends was the Head of Engineering for Mallinckrodt, now retired. He is very experienced in the Chemical Industry and still does consulting work for Mallinckrodt. Mallinckrodt has chemical companies all over the world.
