The Chinese Minister is making a transient political comment. Ericy will be promoting their cdmaOne and W-CDMA options. Ericy can install cdmaOne and use that as a springboard into backward compatible W-CDMA after they have milked GSM expansions as much as they can [where they have a better market share].

The GSM in capacity in China, even after all the expansions which have been annnounced won't come anywhere near satisfying the demand that they'll have. When GSM demand is up against the capacity, they'll have to then throw more money into GSM or start earnestly down the cdmaOne, cdma2000/W-CDMA or OFDM or InfraNet road. We can safely predict that it will be the cdma2000/W-CDMA route because that will be ready next year, but it might be cdmaOne because there is already pressure to get cdmaOne rolling.

Ericy will do well out of it because they'll get their new infrastructure division on the case and they have the people in China to do the work of installation prequeled by marketing and system design.

GSM is toast!
