<<Without a written language there is no history. Native American history began when the first white man began to record it with quill and paper. Everything that happened before is simply assumed>>

Except, of course, where there is an archaeological record, which is extremely rich in South and Central America for example. The problem with that approach when dealing with native americans is that they do not accept the scientific explanation of origins of american populations. Its ironic that native (north) americans are most hostile to the very people (anthropologists) that are most sympathetic to their situation and history. Informed discussion of the subject isnt helped by the fact that the hard facts uncovered by nearly a century of research is buried in journals, monographs, and obscure books, and the extent of popular literature is rarely more than picture travelogues of Mayan ruins. Maybe I should write a couple of books... <vbg>

Re:quill and paper

That is true. The legends are all we have to go by and, legends are iffy like King Arthur. If you ever get the opportunity, and want an interesting interlude, visit some reservations and talk with the very old people. They like to talk.Of course, they can no more back up their legends than we can prove all of our statements. I have said it before and will say it again. These message boards consist primarily of personal opinions.
