Michelle, a good way i get float info is on the yahoo finance site. enter the name of the stock you want to research, click on Profile, and then see the float.

pcln's float is listed as 10M, amzn's is listed as 63M (for example). Actually, 10M for a recent ipo is quite large. For example, inkt ipo'd less than a year ago with a 2.7M float. ebay ipo'd in 9/98 with a 3.5M float. But great demand has resulted in larger ipo floats recently: tscm about 5.5M, etys, about 8.5M, and pcln, the largest i am aware of, at 10M.

btw. i would not short pcln. it's stock has been VERY strong in this correction period, all things considered. pcln will be very volatile in the future, just as amzn has been and still is. but it is not a stock to mess with on the short side for now, imo. Rob

Michelle,

>> BTW how can you tell a stock has a low float. I noticed priceline was up on friday... you said not to short that one because it has a low float. I guess the insiders can't sell yet. Where do you get your info, this is important for any internet short I suppose.

I hardly ever post something serious, but I truly believe that low float is suicide for shorting. And you can ask HJ also. The low float is essential for a short squeeze. Which is what used to happen in amzn and yhoo and doesn't anymore. However the float is very low in eBay and pcln.

How do you find float ? I have a quote.com subscription which has the total num of shares and the float. Zacks has shares held by insiders. I don't know whether Yahoo finance site has this data. You do notice Jan pays a lot of attention to float. So does HJ and so do I. The longs don't mention it because it doesn't hurt them. Besides most longs just follow the herd, anyway. Most of them can't tell market cap from a bottle cap. Not you, but plenty of others.

Here is a link to quote.com which doesn't not require paid subscription.

By the way, I noticed the float on eBay has greatly enlarged. To 33 million shares (out of 120 m total). This is new. Must be insiders sold millions of shares. Maybe that's why it can't hold its high anymore.

The float of pcln is 10 m out of 142 m. Which is a very low ratio. And since the stock is new, most of the shares are held by friends of the company. And they would very much cooperate in a squeeze.
