Just a sidebar sort of thought:

Towing the canoe out to sea and towing the whale back in by power boat, then finally shooting it with a rifle, if I'm not mistaken don't seem like they were in the script 100 years ago.

I wonder if the uninterested observer might look upon this as a more humane way of handling the situation. Perhaps the Indians have evolved a little. I don't know the answer to that proposition.

I remain the uninterested observer,

dm

Whenever someone justifies their actions or desires on the grounds of “cultural heritage/ethnicity” or “tradition” you have met someone that is refusing to think.

Re,re: hunting

Gordon...you are a man after my own heart. I shot the buck, in a medium lope, with a 308 and broke his back. He fell on his back in a shallow ditch. As I approached, his big brown eyes were asking me,Why? What did I ever do to you? I could swear that I heard him. I wiped the tears from my eyes and finished the job. It was the only humane thing left for me to do.
I have not fired a shot from that,or any other, rifle since that moment. Yes, my family and I ate every edible bite of the meat prepared in different ways depending on the cut.

On the personal side, I am wondering if your father or grandfather ever owned the Ford dealership in Brenham. If so, I knew your family well. I even had a couple of dates with big Gordon's daughter, Sylvia. Just wondering. Your privacy is your own.
