Mark, Ah, they would love you down here at NASA. I don't think there is an easy out for the credit bubble. But it certainly doesn't have to be as bad as I think it will be.

Precious metals were a proxy for cash in the Great Depression for the simple reason that gold and silver were money at that time. That's not the case now. They could decline with all other commodities, unless enough people were fearful that cash itself was unsafe and opted for the precious metals. Treasury paper was a good place for savings in the 30s.
