Cahners In-Stat Group Announces that the LAN Packet Switch Market
Grew 18% in Q199 - BUSINESS WIRE, 08:05 a.m. May 24, 1999 Eastern

NEWTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 24, 1999--Cahners In-Stat
Group announced in its Q1 1999 Networking Quarterly results that when
combined, the Layer 2 and Layer 3 LAN packet switch market grew 18
percent in port shipments for 1999.

For Q199, end-use revenue did not grow as aggressively due to the
continuing price pressures of the Layer 2 market. End-user revenues grew
slightly slower in Q199 at five percent. Cisco, 3Com and Nortel Networks
lead the market in both revenue and port shipments with Cisco leading in
both segments with 42 percent and 34 percent respectively, according to
Cahners In-Stat Group. Cahners In-Stat Group also reports: -- End-use
revenue for Layer 2 market increased slightly by four
percent in Q199, while port shipments increased 19 percent.
Fixed-configured sales are driving this growth, especially in the
10/100 space. -- For the third consecutive quarter, Fast Ethernet Switch
ports and end-use revenue surpassed Ethernet ports.

According to Cahners In-Stat Group, Gigabit Ethernet is also seeing
strong growth in both the Layer 2 and Layer 3 space. "Although Gigabit
Ethernet is growing very strong in both Layer 2 and Layer 3, we are
starting to see more demand for Gigabit Ethernet in Layer 3 versus Layer
2," said Emmy Johnson, senior analyst for Cahners In-Stat Group. "This
is the result of networks needing more bandwidth and functionality in the
core as opposed to the closet or workgroup."

The report, LAN Packet Switch and Hub Market Analysis, No.
CQ9902M1/M6, includes detailed market shares, key vendors and a
rolling three-quarter forecast of the LAN hub and switch market. The
report was co-authored by Johnson and Mike Wolf, industry analyst.
