what moving averages do you use or recommend....
I used to be big into all sorts of MA ideas, systems, etc.... but have since shifted away from them. I still use them, but in a very limited capacity, and more as a confirming, or corroborating tool.
In reading the last few posts.... I agree with what Pat has said 100%.
FWIW, about 2-3 years ago I tested a bunch of MA ideas on intra-day, daily, and weekly data. I tested a bunch of things (simple vs. exponential and other types, 1vs. 2 vs. 3 MA crossover systems, Ma's based on the high and low, rather than the close, etc.). To be honest, I never found a MA system that I wanted to use, which would complement what I was doing already. Nonetheless, for better or worse I still sometimes plot ma's on a chart. I like pat's 8,34,55... for a while i looked at 8,21,55. I also like just 13, and 55. The popular thing to do -for better or worse- is to use fibonacci #'s as the inputs (1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89,144,etc.) there is also the choice between a simple MA, vs. exponential, vs. weighted, displaced, etc. There is some difference between different types of Ma's, but I don't use them enough to really care. <g> The only thing that I used to use a lot was a moving average channel, which uses a moving average of the high and a moving average of the low, for resistance and support. I have more experience with it on daily charts than with intra-day. Oh well, I guess I've rambled enough....
