The fastest x86 machines we have are PII450 overclocked to 500 with 1Ghz main memory.

The speed increase to 550 is not a big deal. But a 1Ghz would be a big deal and we would get one. It doesn't matter who its from AMD/Intel/cyrix etc.

If we could slash run times from 6-8 hrs down to a few hrs its a no-brainer.

I don't think the 550 MHz Pentium III Xeon is out with 2 MB of L2 cache yet. It's only out with 512K right now. The fastest CPU with 2 MB of L2 cache is the 500 MHz Xeon.
