I hope you don't seriously believe that the Chinese embassy bombing was deliberate. Our foreigh policy team is highly incompetent, but I don't think they are insane. I agree we should compensate the Chinese as well as the Yugoslavs for the damage we have inflicted in this highly stupid conflict. This way, perhaps we can undo some of the damage to world harmony.

I too expect at least a severe correction in US stocks. They are priced for perfection, and it seems that the world doesn't look that perfect anymore. In fact it starts looking suspiciously like the bad old days of the 70's and 80's.

*** OT *** >>I've decided the attack on the Chinese Embassy was deliberate

Pmfji, Maurice, but I think your conclusions are way off base. Put enough non-combatants in an area where thousand of bombs are flying and it's dead certain an innocent will be hurt. It was a random and tragic accident; why do we need a conspiracy theory to explain it?

Frank

OT- China (Before the bell.)
Maurice - China doesn't like everybody in the US picking apart their human rights record in Tianamen square, and Tibet. They see NATO and the US attack a SOVEREIGN country for what they consider to be an internal matter and they think to themselves, "that could be us next." In addition, the political games are public in the US so all the dirty laundry gets aired and part of that game by Republicans is to attack the DEMS with whatever stones are available - currently those comprise campaign contributions from China, campaign contributions from companies like Loral and Bernie Scwhartz who benefit from commerce with China in militarily sensitive areas (as a Loral shareholder I don't condemn Bernie but it is part of the game that he and we might have benefitted from for a while).
So when the Chinese embassy gets bombed, BY MISTAKE, the Chinese scream bloody murder (which they should). But when the President wants to call and apologize, admits the mistake, it bothers me that the Chinese refuse to accept his call for a couple of days while they whip up hysteria that the attack was INTENTIONAL. They don't even report that the US President is apologizing. Why? They want to make political hay out of it that is why. Yes the US should pay reparations for the Embassy, but I don't want to confuse a Chinese PR machine with the truth. And I don't take your charge that the US or Clinton did it intentionally very seriously either. That is how I see it. Best, Tom

OT OT That was a totally ignorant statement to make. [that the Chinese do not value human life as much as the west]...But to say they value lives very little is not the same thing. [as spending less money per life because the Chinese have less money to spend per person]

Come on Maurice, you put up a straw man. You've taken the reasonable the much more reasonable statement that the Chinese do not value human life as much as western culture and exaggerated it for the sake of having an easy target. While I make no claims to understand the current Chinese mindset, it is certainly true that different cultures put a different value on life. The Japanese in WW-II are the perfect example. Whole civilian populations committed suicide rather than suffer the humiliation of surrender. And, if I remember correctly, either modern day China or India has a much higher infanticide rate [of girls] than the west.

I seriously do think the embassy bombing was deliberate.

Maurice, the Limbaugh-of-the-left. And maybe Clinton's henchmen did murder all those people. As Carl Sagan used to say, 'extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence'.
