WinStar Becomes First U.S. Carrier to Offer Commercial Fixed Wireless Broadband Service in Europe Business Wire - May 25, 1999 02:30 NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 25, 1999-- Company Launches Service in Amsterdam WinStar Europe S.A., a unit of WINSTAR COMMUNICATIONS, INC. (NASDAQ: WCII) today announced the commercial availability of its Wireless Fiber(SM) broadband services in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. WinStar - the first U.S. based carrier to offer fixed wireless broadband services to businesses in Europe - now offers a wide range of competitively priced communications services, including local and international frame relay, ATM, high speed Internet access and private line services. WinStar's Amsterdam services will be provided over a state-of-the-art broadband fixed wireless network. The network uses 38 GHz band frequency, providing reliable and cost-efficient high-speed, high-capacity connectivity. Business customers can use WinStar for local and international services, including broadband on-net connectivity to the United States. "WinStar's international expansion plans are right on track," said Kathleen R. Flaherty, president and chief operating officer of WinStar International. "As anticipated, WinStar will establish service in a number of additional European markets by year-end. We are utilizing the services of Lucent for the build-out, as part of our strategic relationship which was established last fall." In December 1998, WinStar announced it would expand into 50 leading international markets within the next five years. The company has already acquired spectrum in four of its top ten targeted international markets. WinStar selected Lucent Technologies to provide network design, build-out services and operation and maintenance for its Amsterdam network, as well as its additional international markets. Lucent operates and maintains the network from its NetCare(TM) network operations center in Sophia Antipolis, France. Under its OEM agreement with Ascend Communications, Lucent has also provided WinStar with a multi-service data platform using Ascend's switches, as well as Broadband Access Products to support frame relay, ATM and Internet traffic. WinStar Communications, Inc. is a pioneer in providing business customers with broadband communications services, including local and long distance phone service, as well as high-speed Internet access, data and information services. WinStar provides these Wireless Fiber(SM) services in more than 30 U.S. markets over its own local broadband networks, using its licenses in the 28 and 38 GHz spectrum, which are connected to the company's nationwide fiber-optic network.
