Well it's been around since day one practically and folks are pretty use to it. Probably prevented a few flame wars as well.

The editing feature is one of the best things SI offers. I've often noticed a change I want to make only after I've accepted the preview and posted the message. If it's a choice between real-time searching and editing of posts, I'd far rather keep the edit-ability.
