<<You have to create a "bigger than life" effect. That is what we need right now. Personally, I think Dell needs an advertising over-haul. I think he ought do do his own commercials. He sells the company better than anyone. >>

Westmoreland: You make some good points. DELL has hired a new Ad Agency and I believe they are re-vamping their consumer marketing effort. IMO, MSD is a very powerful communicator -- on TV, on the Internet or in person. He is a great asset and should play a lead role in a new global DELL identity campaign. DELL does pretty well when it comes to marketing to corporate customers and consumers. Yet, they need to improve their efforts to reach current and potential investors. These important stakeholders are looking for clear and convincing reasons to continue to support DELL and BUY more shares. It comes down to how DELL packages itself and how DELL articulates its vision for thriving in the new digital economy. Many of us KNOW that DELL will continue to be "a player" but many shareholders need more confidence in DELL's future prospects. This is just my opinion. I think there is a lot going on at DELL behind the scenes and I wouldn't be surprised if we get some BIG announcements soon.

Best Regards,

Scott

BTW, I am reading a May '99 Supplement to CIO Magazine and I just noticed DELL has strategically placed their "BE DIRECT Ad" right inside the front cover. IMO, this is quite an effective Ad. On the first spread it says..."Sure there are more and more advantages to being Direct. We should know. We're creating them." On the next page there is a clear an concise listing of many of the advantages of Going Direct With DELL. There is also DELL's toll free number and link to its website.

Westmoreland & others;

Nasty slump we've been in recently. I'd love to see Dell break out of it; and break out soon. But PR is not going to do the trick unless there is something of substance behind the gimmickry. These past 10 years are based on performance, pure and simple. The times Dell performance failed, the stock stumbled. When Dell performed and produced the numbers, the stock flew. Image is NOT everything, despite what Andre says. I feel it is commendable that Mr. Dell does not dance to the music of the market and come out to "defend his company" every time some anal-ist or reporter murmurs some loaded, misguided, bit of rhetoric. I'd much rather he stay the course he has been on and continue growing the business through hard work and vision. JMO.
