Packers sign top draft pick CB Antuan Edwards

GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN (TICKER) -- The Green Bay Packers today signed first-round draft choice Antuan Edwards, who will be paid to battle all of the big receivers in the NFC Central.

Terms were not disclosed.

The 6-foot-1, 208-pound Edwards was the 25th overall choice in the April draft out of Clemson and the Packers are counting on him to contain the likes of Randy Moss and Cris Carter of the Minnesota Vikings and Herman Moore and Johnnie Morton of the Detroit Lions.

Edwards recently underwent toe surgery, but the Packers expect him to be ready in July for training camp.

A semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award last season, Edwards started his collegiate career as a safety and moved back to cornerback as a junior. He was slowed by hamstring and toe injuries as a senior but still had 43 tackles, two interceptions and 14 passes deflected.

Known for his big-play ability, Edwards returned a fumble 93 yards for a touchdown and a kickoff 85 yards for a score in the same game.

Edwards is the fourth first-rounder to come to terms, but the only player lower than Torry Holt of St. Louis, the fifth overall pick.

In other moves, the Packers placed running back Brent Moss, linebacker Antonio London and offensive tackle Antone Davis on waivers.
