As a prior investor in 3com, I do not believe that that company would
be a good fit. I have some health skepticism with the management (because I got burnt pretty badly) and their abilities. For example, where was the due diligence prior to the acquisition of US Robotics? Additionally, their main product lines are (at present) in direct competition with csco & intel (routers, splitters, etc). The also have numerous software engineers who provide specialized protocol services to companies for secure intranets and the like. The magic word is synergy...and I cannot clearly visualize how such an arrangement would bear fruition...

Although palm pilot is a huge success and will probably be a strong item going forward, its not 3coms staple product. Anyway, the principal inventors of the palm pilot have left and now run a small company which will directly compete against the palm pilot. Furthermore, I see aol shortly providing a competing device, which in my guess utilizes the instant chat technology (ICQ) for instant telephony in addition to web functionality.

Hand held internet devices will be the future but buying 3com or the palm pilot division, I believe is not the way for dell.

Of couse I'm not an expert and am certainly open to discussion on this matter.
