Then is it your position that artists such as Rembrandt were as popular (or respected or appreciated) during their lifetimes as they are now?

Picaso was certainly famous and respected during his lifetime. Is it your position that he is less, the same or more famous now?

I think in both cases one would have to say it is more now than during their lifetimes, that's my point in this regard. It must always be so. The fame of the great must grow greater with time, not the other way around. And, the generation least likely to appreciate fully an artist's work is his own. Ask Bach or Mozart.

But that has nothing to do with the fact that everyone is an artist.
