I've been thinking and that can be dangerous. Consider the following:

1. The season, and the market corrections that historically take place this time of year.

2. The split day - May 28, the day before a three-day holiday which would generally be a low volume day.

3. The unusually long period of time between the split announcement and the split date (to dampen per-split enthusiasm).

Did DW set May 28 as the split date because he anticipated much lower pre-split prices than did his shareholders? (Pre-split estimates topped out between 350 and 450 a month or two ago). There was considerable speculation that at those high prices there would not be enough shares available to split more than 2:1, and a 2:1 split at 300 to 450 would not bring the share price down to a reasonable level. Another split would have to follow in record time or the split would have to be adjusted to a 3:1 or 4:1 in order to bring the share price down to an affordable level.

Well, here we are. The day before a split and CMGI is DOWN 6 5/16 to 194 5/16. Sure there may be a late day run-up, but the post split price is obviously going to be closer to 100 than 200.
