Not necessarily Judy. If your bent is trading then that is how the tax situation will go. If not there are many considerations other than selling the stock to mitigate risk. I have owned KO for almost 19 years now as i have AA. Mcd I have owned for almost 12 years. Managing a portfolio can often be simply cutting the beta or volatility in half by many methods. Holding stocks in general for the long term typically result in the long term average and if that is the objective one might just as well buy and index fund. I have one account where I have only T and LU as 100% investment and I don't do anything with them save selling out of the money calls on T peridoically. There are many right answers and just wholesale selling isn't necessarily the right one. Peter Lynch typically stayed fully invested and simply shifted weight from more volatile to less volatile issues periodically and traded around core positions that were held for the very long term. That is what is so interesting about this game. There isn't just one right move. There are many as you know. When one becomes adept enought to think clearly about how options fit into the picture of management the game shifts up to a higher level. What one must do is find a method of analysis that he or she can embrace, believe in and have the guts to stick to the plan. In that respect there are many methods that make sense and work in the right hands. I have found only one that works in my hands and the many I have taught. Tom

Judy,
FWIW, I've owned and traded CSCO since 1991.
In 1994 it hit a high in March and then fell off 50% by July.
It did not regain the March 1994 high until April 1995.
One strategy to consider is holding the stock and writing covered calls.
Using PnF to help out in the timing, this strategy could let you ride the
price both up and down. Covered calls can be used in IRA portfolios.
Regards,
Hal
