I think AOL would be wasting their money buying CBS, and I would probably sell my
AOL if they did buy it. AOL doesn't need CBS. Broadcasting is a sunset industry.

They could be buying something else. I do not know.

> sunset industry.

Ooh!! Another buzz word! I've only heard that one 5 times in the last week. Please, keep it up.

Just for me, if you would, whisper "second inning of Game One of the world series" in my ear.. it would make me feel a lot more comfortable about mortgaging my trailer to buy 80 shares of Amazon at $205 per share on margin..

Broadcasting is a sunset industry.

This rates up there with "Print is Dead," as one of the most ridiculous things ever typed. Only someone not in the entertainment/broadcasting industry could believe that statement.

Broadcasting is a sunset industry...I spent my entire career at ABC

William,

Although I would not refute the bleak overall industry trends that you cite, I believe that your analysis fails to consider the potential future impact of two important technologies on the broadcast industry. One is satellites, which greatly diminish the distribution cost of broadcast and potentially trumps the network-local affiliate relationship model. The other is streaming media, which essentially lowers barriers to entry into the business, thereby allowing a grass roots creative revolution to unfold unchecked by issues of traditional studio economics.

Broadcast is not going away. Smart broadcasters (and I certainly include CBS and NBC among them) will successfully morph and gradually coopt new media technologies to remain highly profitable.

Sam
Long CBS and loving it

I've had this quote up on my office wall for over three years. Makes me laugh every time I read it.

Buying AOL stock...lose 80%
Buying Yahoo stock [your pick to replace the Networks]...lose 90%
Reading your posts from the top of the bubble...PRICELESS.
