Ref-< Would you take the current weakness in Intel as a chance to add some more? What is your prediction on the acceptance of IA64? >

Intel is weak because of the nervousness caused by the K-7 introduction hype, High Tech Stock Weakness, and the invariable rumors about lower than expected earnings for Intel which circulate a month before the quarter end. These normal factors are transient, and thus this is a good buying opportunity. My only worry is that Coppermine design has to be completely functional now, to allow large production within a few weeks. Maybe Paul can elaborate.

Baring a major stumble, IA64 will be the dominant 64 bit processor a few years from now. The Merced bandwagon is almost unstoppable ! The major unknown is the size of the 64 bit market. Mainframes, large databases and servers are obvious candidates, but the number of units here is relatively small. How do you create a mass market for 64 bit processors ? Maybe if you stored and processed movies on hard disks, you need 64 bit power. Or if the Merced[EPIC] gives much more throughput than 32 bit designs with equivalent number of transistors, the mass applications will migrate to 64 bit for better performance. In any case, as you are aware, Intel is sponsoring a several hundred million dollar fund to promote applications for Merced.
