I understand Demming, Juran, participative management, QC Circles, JIT, et al. As you said, been there, done that. All these concepts are great as long as things are going well and are stable. When things start coming apart, and budgets are cut, then the trouble starts. Cut back QC Circles, cut back staffs, supply problems develop, etc. In short, "everyone for themselves." I'm not sure Dell has ever experienced this phase of the business cycle. It will be interesting to see how they respond when confronted with a downturn, and how the model holds up.
