IBM to drop Rambus from future PC plans
IBM has decided to drop Rambus DRAM from its upcoming PC plans in favor of PC 133 SDRAM, and will be disengaging itself from the Rambus technology along multiple fronts including commitments by IBM Microelectronics to produce the devices, EN has learned from sources close to the company. The IBM decision, which followed delays in chipset support from Intel Corp. for Rambus-based systems, deals a stunning blow to the already-cloudy future of Rambus' technology. Other PC OEMs that have been sitting on the fence may use the IBM move as justification for abandoning Rambus, at least for their next generation of desktops. Sources said the decision was driven by a comprehensive technical study that indicated Rambus offered no performance advantages over PC 133 SDRAMs, and the assessment that it was not a good business decision to source proprietary technologies. The move bolsters support for non-proprietary memory technology such as PC 133 SDRAM and double data rate DRAM. The decision could prompt Intel and other chipset makers to increase their support for industry standard synchronous memory solutions that are also favored by price-pressured DRAM suppliers because they do not have to pay royalties to Rambus on each device shipped
