This is why it is possible for me to see the hand of the Lord, playing one off against the other for the furthering of His will... neither national government honored Him. I would hope the Lord would be more interested in the individuals concerned - many of whom were deeply religious - than in whether the governments honored him or not. In any event, I doubt there was a divine hand anywhere in that war. Seems thoroughly human to me.
