My daughter is heartbroken because
she's unable to chat with her friends online.

Granted AOL was overboard. But any girl who is heartbroken because she can't chat online needs to get a real life. Go out and run barefoot in the fields. Read a real book. (Remember those?) Go visit some friends in person.

I do appreciate the internet. But overdependence on it at a young age is not healthy.

Ever wonder if this is an urban legend?

You don't need an AOL account to use AOL IM....

Even though its cited as being from 'familyPC' I doubt the validity of this story. Since no account is necessary (AOL IM is free)... I tend to think this story is false.
