Here's a little something worth discussing on this thread. This SEC filing, dated May 27, 1999, indicates the registration for sale of a massive number of shares of shares of AOL(about 31 million shares or $3.75 billion) by people like Barry Diller and Paul Allen, as well as Sprint.

31 million shares is only about a day and a half's worth of AOL volume. Nevertheless, the people involved aren't dummies, though they probably do have other uses for the money.
