<< ..they are coming to us .. >>

Always felt that Ampex was positioning to participate in the "next wave" of Internet happenings.

That is, what currently occupies the news headlines, and the commercial and investment bankers, is about infra structural issues, transport issues if I may: the consolidation of the cable companies, the subcontracting in the set top box engineering and development, the exploration of alternative protocols and their manifestations in DSL, ISDN, Wireless etc., the capacity (both server and bandwidth) among the Net Portals.

In my opinion, the competitive issues of content for television like delivery on the Web and narrowcasting are only beginning to emerge. With the ramp up of the Malta "showcase," and the coming on line of the Ampex facilities in LA and NY, the bar will be permanently raised on content competition - from the customer point of view.

Note however, that Ampex is targeting both media content and "back end" equipment and technology.

The key competitive advantage which Ampex will have is their digital "know how", and their technological and engineered equipment portfolio. Here Ampex will not only showcase content technology, equipment and media delivery at their affiliated and owned sites, but they will be in a position to sell equipment, expertise and technology licenses to their content competitors.

At any point, Ampex would be able to continually raise the bar by making engineering innovations in "Digital Content Creation", storage and archiving and immediately showcase the results as customer content improvements at their production sites.

Is this the business model which approaches the meaning of ----- "juggernaut?"

This could also explain why Ampex, so far, has avoided head on competition or even apparent interest, in the general digital storage market and certainly in the low-end storage market (where MicroNet had some foothold).

Hal, this is worth reading. It explains why the current content creators are somewhat frozen like deer in headlights and why they would be coming to Ampex to do joint ventures a la ISS LLC.

tvbroadcast.com

It speaks also to the "captive audience" model.
