Yes, I believe the acid wouldn't harm the tomatoes and it wouldn't be happening all at once anyhow. I don't think I'd be too worried about the acidity, especially if you've seen a neighbour using wood mulch successfully. You'll know you've really got too much acidity if you get moss growing... but moss can be very nice...some people have a hard time growing it when they want to... (-:
