LOL! Bob, someone has sold you a bill of goods about the nature of Christianity. On the one hand, you do not seem to grasp that ideas like "respect for your fellow man" and "tolerance" are foreign to the world- view put forth by Jesus and the Apostles. They are calling for repentance, warning against the dire judgment of God, asserting that faith in the Resurrection is the only way of salvation. It is pretty rough stuff! Some of that roughness was reflected in the harsh treatment of heretics during the Middle Ages and early Modern periods. Heretics endangered the soul of others, and therefore had to be forced to abjure or be executed. Eventually, the Wars of Religion became an intolerable burden, and various philosophers ( such as Locke and Erasmus) began to argue for toleration. By now, the idea of a right of private conscience has become pretty ingrained, even among Christians, and no one wants a free- for- all, especially not in America. But you have still refused to directly address my strongest arguments, and instead have talked about a practice that has been widespread for years as if it were the entering wedge of the Inquisition...

And you wonder why I fear the imposition of the religious will of the majority?

If you truly believe what you say then I wonder how you can support the republicans now. I used to be a republican but I believe firmly in the separation of church and state. I am not comfortable with prayer in school any more than adhering to the fact that there is no superior being in school. Therefore, I cannot support republicans. I feel the same way about the abortion issue. I have no evidence that this is murder other than a bunch of evangelical nuts on Pay-per-view. This is not the way to manage public policy and yet the republicans make it their key issue. They have become a party of religious nuts who are so hung up on their way of thinking its almost farcical, and thats why they will lose, at least thats what I'm thinking, we won't know until 2000. (Bush might win but hes not pushing their agenda, watch the republicans in california go down in flames though)
