You said that beautifully. Enough to make my heart tug for the Bay or New Orleans... or somewhere in Maine. Not Maine in the winter. Maybe one winter. It would be great to hole up in a cabin in the woods, on the coast, with enough food and firewood for a couple or three months and not come out till it's gone. And maybe a computer. Just maybe. I always had in mind just having shortwave radio, but that was before the internet.

<<The fog horn in the dark moist air looking out at the sea. >>

One time we were fishing in Lake Michigan on the end of a pier in Two Rivers, Wisconsin on a foggy day under a fog horn. Later that night I noticed our conversation had a certain cadence to it even when ordering dinner. 20 seconds of talk, 5 seconds of silence.
