So true, and one of the reasons so many AMD people visit here and proclaim the death of Intel.

Intel is going to make strategic mistakes at times, the real key is how they respond to those mistakes. This is where a lot of AMD hypsters who frequent this thread miss the fundamental issues which give Intel such a strategic competitive advantage. They live under the assumption that if AMD could just design a faster chip then Intel is doomed.

There's no doubt that pushing the envelope with regard to processor speed is very important to Intel. However, running a company which intends to compete with Intel is going to take a lot more that a new silicon design. They're going to need to bring all the pieces of what defines a quality organization to the table. Finance, Management, Engineering, Marketing, Quality, Research, Fabs, HR, and a culture of continuous improvement. This is where AMD is truly struggling, and where Cyrix discovered they could never compete. Most of the blind lovers of AMD only see one aspect of this multidimensional issue.

Remember a couple of years ago when Cyrix decided it wasn't in their best interest to buy a booth at Comdex? They basically threw in the towel and came to the realization they didn't have the talent to compete with Intel in all facets of this industry. I expect AMD to make a similar move in the not too distant future. They simply haven't the management talent to compete with Intel. They may have the engineering skills, but too much else is missing in that organization to be a real threat. Operationally, they haven't brought a design to manufacturing in years without major problems. Their "Design for Manufactureability" skills must be severely lacking.

If Intel has one flaw, I believe it's still in their marketing department. It's not enough to respond to customer demands as Intel is so good at. They must create new customers, excite them, and teach them what they don't know they need!

When I look at an Intel television commercial, I immediately think... This is ALL they could come up with?? With all the excitement the internet is bringing the world, this is it! The breath of issues they could excite the public with just astounds me, and yet they're still focusing on glitzy feel good about Intel tech adds. Sure, feel good about Intel is important. But how about we feel good about the purchase of a computer! And go out and get one today! Don't just leave it up to the Dell's and the IBM's of the world. Put that 100 million dollar budget to work on getting PC penetration rates up to 100 percent! Shoot for the stars, and really demonstrate the VALUE of owning a PC!

Well enough of my yacking.... I better be careful getting off of this horse huh? :-)
