"I think I'm on the L4 setting (neighbors calling the cops!) on my machine. Thanks
for the input. Have tried ATL0 and ATMO (thanks CharleyMike!) in the "extra
settings" box but still no luck.

I'm thinking about trying to enter these commands somewhere in DOS instead. Any
ideas?"

Once again, try changing it directly from the Dial-up Networking connection icon instead of the modem icon in Control Panel or through the Device Manager. I've rarely seen it not work.

As far as DOS commands go, I can't think of one. Unless the manufacturer of the modem has some software program for this problem that would not be overwritten by Windows on load.

Who makes the modem?

Rich

Modem noises...(continued)

Try this ...

Use a terminal program such as HyperTerm available in Win98. Manually enter AT commands and see if you can find what works going through the 'back door.' Once you know what gets your modem's attention, you can then work at getting your message passed on by Windows.

This problem seems tougher than it first appears. Best to break it into smaller pieces and solve each individually.

Best luck, PW

In my computer and in the folder dial-up networking you have to right mouse click on your dial up ISP icon click properties and configure the modem in there as well.

Set vol to off. Doing it under modem in control panel is not enough

Richard is right. That's how I turn off the vol for the modem on my notebook.
