<<I believe that in due time slavery would have been abolished even in the deep South.>>

I have heard this argument before, Lather. In fact, I believe Freddy himself has made it. I find it a curious one, however. For example, what is your concept of "due time"? We can see from the very difficult place in society that African Americans still find themselves, that the after effects of slavery on self-image, parenting skills, physical health and every aspect of life are extremely long lasting and very damaging.

Since the South was an agrarian society with crops dependent upon a huge labor force, what would have changed that? And aren't black people still being murdered simply because of their skin color? I guess I would assert that I find it doubtful that the South would have voluntarily given up slavery. In fact, I think there is a significant minority of people in the South who would still hold slaves today if it were possible.

My own feeling is that the United States would not have survived as a country had the South won the Civil War. I think a European nation would have tried to use the slavery issue as an excuse to conquer a divided nation. Slavery corrupts the slave owner as much as it damages the slave. I think we would have folded because of plain old bad karma. <<<);^)
