Well, what is the actual process of "refining" salt, Del? Is it a chemical one? I had assumed, perhaps erroneously, that it was.

<<<< When a huge cloud of grasshoppers descends upon a crop, would it be possible
to counter with some creature that eats grasshoppers? >>

All you need to do is find a way to get 10 million birds per acre to eat 'em. If it
weren't for pesticides, you wouldn't be losing an occasional crop, you would be
losing a lot of them.>>

In answer to that, if it weren't for pesticides, there would be many, many more birds. Aren't you aware that birds are disappearing very rapidly almost everywhere? Even in Ireland, where I was awakened every morning by absolutely glorious birds ongs, there are not as many now, and I believe that the reason most frequently given is the increased use of pesticides.

Incidentally, your analogy about Mr. Rodale is a little illogical. The fact that he did not die of a pesticide-related death does not mean very much. His pesticide-free diet may have served him well and increased his general health and enjoyment of his life, or it may not. Certainly, there are causes of death that are not pesticide related. However, with the very much decreased human male fertility, and increase in cancers since pesticide use has become widespread, it is certainly logical to argue that they are generally not a healthful thing.
