hey billy,

this particular problem seems to be very popular lately! we've been discussing it a lot recently. but obviously you missed all that. am i right?

long story short, billy, make sure that all other apps are shut down so that nothing is running when you defrag. just leave 'explorer' running.

then try it and everything should be fine.

btw, you can try searching this subject only by entering 'defrag' in the search field at the bottom of the page. i did not try it, but i'll bet a lot of the recent posts i just alluded to will pop up.

good luck!

:)

In addition to Mark's post...

If you want to find out what programs are running, hit <CTRL>+<ALT>+<DEL> at the same time and close all programs in the task manager except for Explorer.

At that point, try running Scandisk again...you should have no difficulties.

I know you've solved the problem already, but I thought I'd add:

I used to get that message when I ran scandisk in the "thorough" mode. I later found out that it's not necessary to use that mode and now I only use "standard" -- it's very quick -- takes a few seconds.

Someone else might be able to explain the differences.
