I think it's pretty well-established that there was no flood of the dimensions that is described in the story of Noah, at least by archeologists. Your suggestion is interesting, that an increase in mean sea level would seem like a flood of global proportions to those who lived on the coast. The part about the more advanced types living along the water's edge and banishing the less advanced types to the central and mountainous areas is also interesting.

We tend to forget that serious archeology, as opposed to trophy-hunting, is a relatively new science. I'm sure there are many new discoveries ahead! I recently saw a show on the History Channel about Cleopatra's palace, which is completely underwater now.
