FASTV.COM CHOOSES ABOVENET, ALTEON, EMC, NETWORK APPLIANCE, INFOSEEK AND CISCO PR NEWSWIRE - June 01, 1999 08:28 To Power the Internet's First Searchable Video Destination Site
FasTV Network Hosts Over 350,000 Hours of Searchable Video and Can Stream To
121,000 Simultaneous Video Viewers
LOS ANGELES, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- FasTV.com, the Internet's first searchable video destination site for consumers and businesses, today announced that they have designed and placed into service an unparalleled Internet broadcast Network. FasTV's Network, architected with technology leaders EMC, Network Appliance, Cisco, Infoseek and RealNetworks, can support up to 121,000 simultaneous video viewers. The Network, hosted with AboveNet, will enable viewers to access fully searchable video clips from a library of over 350,000 hours, with capacity for over one million hours, of current and archived video content.
Two weeks ago, FasTV.com announced the consumer launch of its website, featuring video from leading news, entertainment, sports, business and lifestyle sources aggregated across leading media brands such as CNN, CNNfn, Bloomberg Television, New Line Cinema and others. Supported by a substantial Online and Print advertising campaign, FasTV.com has already seen more than a 500% growth in overall traffic.
An integral part of FasTV's Network capabilities is its proprietary technology -- the Distributed Media Acquisition Platform (DMAP), which enables the Network to receive up to one thousand real time video transmissions at broadband resolution, and make them available for viewing online at FasTV.com within thirty seconds from the time of broadcast.
FasTV has also developed proprietary Video Publishing Tools (VPT) that automatically receive, select, combine, edit and create rich features gathering clips from diverse sources in less than 10% of the time required in a manual editing and publishing process.
"FasTV chose to work with these technology companies because they are the best," said Blair Harrison, CTO of FasTV. "The distributed Network we've built enables us to capture video and other materials from a variety of sources across the world, and make it available to FasTV.com viewers within seconds. We have the capacity to handle a staggering amount of video and related materials and a network that was designed for fault tolerance from the ground up. This enables us to handle virtually any content partner's storage and serving needs and create the most reliable viewing experience available on the Internet to FasTV.com users," Harrison added.
FasTV's Network, built using gigabit technologies and components throughout, combines massive redundant storage from EMC and Network Appliance, switching and load-balancing devices from Cisco and Alteon, and multiple indexing engines from Infoseek to provide a robust, scalable, resilient and extremely high-speed system. RealNetworks is customizing for FasTV.com the company's patented streaming video technology.
Viewers can access FasTV.com using a 28.8k or faster dial-up connection or a continuous broadband connection. Visitors have free access to FasTV.com content via a standard browser (version 4.0+) and a RealPlayer G2. The RealPlayer G2 plug-in is available as a free download through the FasTV.com site.
