Re Oil spill remediation

I understand that there are certain bacteria that can break oil down into subcomponents that aren't as harmful. With such an approach, 1x/2x/3x may not be a good gauge to effectiveness.

The limit would be the amount of time the bacteria had to act on the spill before it got dispersed or damaged sensitive areas.

When I first read about this approach, I had to wonder what would happen if such critters got into a producing well.
